Caribbean Fest - Operation Love
By: Jaimie M. Engle

Labor Day. That once a year celebration when we gather to honor the social and economic achievements of American workers. Since 1882, the first Monday of September has been dedicated to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our great nation. Many parades walk briskly along roped off streets lined with onlookers; workers enjoying the day off and children hoping for flying candy.

The weekend preceding this holiday consists of events and festivals throughout the United States. Operation Love hosted the second annual Caribbean Fest ’09 in Cocoa Village Riverfront Park. Chosen for its picturesque beauty, the location epitomizes the purpose of the festival which is to honor the community within a cultural and nonviolent atmosphere. The event got off to a very late start but was soon hopping with reggae beats, gospel singers, and hip-hop artists on the outdoor stage of the amphitheatre. The smell of barbeque smokers and curried meat wafted through the air while vendors offered an array of items for sale. Families relaxed in lawn chairs or spread blankets, children played in the playground and water area, and groups stood in front of the stage enjoying the entertainment.

Performers include Hazakim, DJ Boom, EmpressAmigas, X-Zynga, Marc DeSouza, Wayne Chynn, Daddy Mack, Shorty Don, and many more, with an after party at Bankers Bistro and Tavern in downtown Cocoa Village. This event was sponsored in part by Depot Café, Brevard Warriors Dance Team, Visual Expressions, WMEL AM 1300, Think In, Real Deal Audio, PER Consulting Services Inc., and the City of Cocoa.

With approximately 700 people in attendance the flavor of the Labor Day holiday tasted sweet in the energizing Florida sun as residents enjoyed a break from the daily grind to enjoy Love, Peace, & Joyfulness – Caribbean Fest 2009 from Operation Love.
