HYPERFLITE SKYHOUNDZ CANINE DISC COMPETITION SCHEDULED

The largest disc-dog competition is coming to Palm Bay. A local championship for the 2009 Hyperflite Skyhoundz Canine Disc Championships will be held on Saturday, September 19 at 10 a.m. at Palm Bay Regional Park. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the park, located at 1951 Malabar Rd NW, Palm Bay.

There is no entry fee for competitors and admission is free for spectators. Novice and veteran competitors are encouraged to compete. All competitors will receive a free official Hyperfilte K-10 Competition Standard flying disc, and the top three teams will receive awards. Contestants and their canine teammates will earn points for basic throws and catches, with bonus points for mid-air catches in the Distance/Accuracy event. The event welcomes mixed breeds as well as purebred dogs. Many of the canines expected to compete were rescued from local animal shelters or rescue groups. Athletic canines will be seen, literally, jumping for joy!

MODELING CLASS AT RODES PARK STARTS SEPTEMBER 16

WEST MELBOURNE, FL. — Modeling for adults and children ages six and older will be offered at Max K. Rodes ParkCommunity Center, 3000 Minton Road in West Melbourne, on Wednesdays from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., beginning September 16. Topics for this session will include how to smile and how to stand, make up and skin care for all ages, jackets, coats, and capes, social graces, catalog and television modeling, and more. Participants will find out how to look their best with simple applications of movement and appropriate dress. The class will conclude with a show for parents and friends. The fee is $40 for six weeks of instruction, cash only. This activity is sponsored by Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department. Bob Ross Painting Class Held at Port St. John Community Center

PORT ST. JOHN, Fla.— Bob Ross painting classes will be held at the Port St. John Community Center on Thursdays, September 17 & 24, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This two-session class will teach basic painting skills, such as types of brushes/blades and techniques for color blending for seascapes and landscape settings. The $45 session fee includes all materials. Participants will have the opportunity to complete a 16 x 20 painting. Call Ann Feistel at 321-427-9268 to pre-register for this class. Derelict Vessel Removal Efforts Continue

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Brevard County Boating & Waterways Program has just completed another phase of its continuing efforts to remove derelict and abandoned vessels from the County’s waterways. Recent work in north and central Brevard removed 11 vessels, with over 10 tons of debris. Working closely with state and local law enforcement, County staff has been able to remove 27 derelict/abandoned vessels, totaling over 55 tons of debris, since the beginning of 2009. Project support and funding through the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners and the Florida Inland Navigation District has been key to the success of this project. This brings the program total to over 120 vessels removed since 2005. The project is intended to improve boater safety and protect water quality and submerged aquatic resources in Brevard’s Intercoastal Waterways. My Manners and Me Offered at Walter Butler Community Center

COCOA (SHARPES), FLA.— My Manners and Me will meet on Saturdays, starting on September 12, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Walter Butler Community Center. This program is for girls ages 7 to 12 years of age and will teach basic etiquette. The cost for the six-week program is $15 and requires a minimum of 10 participants. The community center is located at Bernice G. Jackson Park, 4201 North U.S. Highway 1, Cocoa. Old Florida Fest

Melbourne, FL – Brevard County Parks and Recreation is pleased to host the annual Florida Fest at Erna Nixon Park on Saturday October 3rd, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Erna Nixon Park is located at 1200 Evans Rd., Melbourne, FL. The Florida Fest is a celebration of all things “old Florida.” Events will include storytelling, dance and music and a wide variety of historical, environmental and informational displays. Food concessions are available from local caterers and local crafters will share some old time art. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by locals including Storytree Productions, the Florida Cracker cloggers, and musician’s Chris Kahl, Sunnyland Steve, and ALmostnormAL. Vendors Wanted for Craft Fair and Flea Market at Viera Regional Park Community Center

 Brevard County Parks and Recreation is hosting a Craft Fair and Flea Market on Saturday, October 31, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The Viera Regional Community Center is located at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, inside the Viera Regional Park Complex.

The cost for a 5 foot vendor table is $15.90; space available indoors or under a tent outdoors. Vendor applications are available at the Community Center. Payment for table space must be made by Wednesday, October 25, 2009. Bring your children to the Craft Fair and enjoy the Kids Spooky Spectacular Fun Day from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The fee of $2.00 per child includes take home crafts, games, a costume contest at 11:00 a.m., and more! Adults are free with paid admission of child. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

ZUMBA CLASSES OFFERED IN PALM BAY

Brevard County Parks & Recreation and Gina Bardy, certified aerobics instructor, will provide zumba lessons at the Ted Whitlock Community Center on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., beginning September 9. Zumba is a high-energy, Latin-based, dance workout. It’s easy to do, works for all fitness levels, and is so much fun you don’t realize you’re exercising. A typical Zumba workout can burn 500 to 700 calories.

Zumba incorporates salsa, meringue, cha-cha, flamenco, samba, raggaeton (Latin hip-hop) and more for a full aerobic workout. The cost is $35 per month, but the registration fee will be waived for the month of September.
