Wuesthoff Health System Auxiliary Awards College Scholarships to Brevard County Students

The Wuesthoff Health System Auxiliary recently awarded nearly $8,000 in college scholarships to 17 Brevard County students for the fall 2009 college semester.

“Wuesthoff’s Auxiliary has awarded college scholarships to Brevard County students for more than 40 years, giving away more than $200,000,” said Sandy Williams, Wuesthoff Health System Volunteer Services manager.

Funds used for scholarship-grants are derived from multiple Auxiliary fund-raisers held throughout the year, along with profits from the Pink Shelf Gift Shops located at both Wuesthoff Medical Center Rockledge, and Melbourne.

“It’s important for our organization to give back to the community and support these bright ambitious students,” said Gail Parrott, Wuesthoff Auxiliary president.

“We have students planning to study in the fields of nursing, radiology, pre-med, biomedical engineering, pharmacy, and health sciences.” Students are chosen based on multiple criteria set forth by the Wuesthoff Scholarship Committee. Students applying for scholarship funds must be a resident of Brevard County, though not required to attend a Florida college or university, and maintain a 3.0 scholastic average (or better) to be considered for the application process. Additionally, students are required to submit transcripts, references, recommendations, and personal essays explaining their desire to study and work in the medical field.

Scholarships granted are $250 per semester for recipients attending a 2-year college, and $500 per semester for recipients attending a 4-year college or university.

“Students awarded Wuesthoff scholarships will receive the gifts twice each year throughout their college career as long as they maintain a 3.0 or better grade point average,” added Parrott.
